Clean Indoor Air: Breathe Easier By Randy Arthur President, Arthur Air Conditioning Ultraviolet light attachments inside the air handler of your A/C system can provide a healthier atmosphere for your family, especially at this time of year, when homes tend to be closed up and air is recirculating inside. The more tightly sealed your windows and doors, the less fresh air moves into your home, and the more important it is to make sure recirculating air is as clean as possible. Take some common-sense precautions to keep your indoor air quality as good as possible before investing in any equipment:
These won’t keep all pollutants out of your indoor air. Especially here in Florida, it seems allergy season is nearly year ‘round. Ultraviolet (UV) lighting installed inside your air handler will kill at least some of the mold spores (like the one pictured below,) mildew, bacteria and viruses that are silently floating in your house. Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation has been used for airborne and surface disinfection since 1909 when Marseilles, France, used it to disinfect the city’s water supply. Previously limited to hospitals and municipal water treatment plants, UV light has come into household use at its price has come down. It works by breaking apart the molecular bonds of the DNA of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce. Spores and some types of bacteria take more time to break down; other invaders are easy targets. UV lights do not take the place of clean filters! Changing your filters precisely on time is just as important, because filters remove particles that UV cannot touch. For the cleanest indoor air possible, use both ultraviolet light directly on recirculating air and a fresh filter.
