| Energy Star: The Star of your Home By Randy Arthur President, Arthur Air Conditioning The average homeowner in the United States spends $1,900 annually on energy bills (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.) At this time of year, lots of people feel as if the number is really double that much! No matter how energy-aware you are, there is always something else you can do to increase the energy efficiency of your home—and that translates to dollars saved. Look for the familiar Energy Star logo on home appliances, air conditioners or heat pumps, furnaces or any other equipment that uses electricity or gas. They may cost a bit more than the bottom of the line, but you will more than make up for the added cost in lowered electric bills (and a smaller carbon footprint.) Improvements in efficiency in the past decade might even make it sensible to replace some appliances, such as refrigerators and heat pumps, before the old ones go to the Appliance Cemetery of their own accord. A refrigerator, heat pump or air conditioner more than 12 years old is probably so inefficient that a replacement will pay for itself within a few years. When it’s time to replace old equipment, make sure it’s sized and installed properly. If just one household in 10 did this, the change would prevent more than 17 billion pounds of greenhouse gas, according to the EPA. A programmable thermostat used properly can save up to $150 per year, paying for itself within two years. But you must resist the temptation to override the settings for a see-saw cooling atmosphere, or you will end up overworking your air conditioner and spending more. Your home may require several thermostats for maximum savings; talk to a licensed air conditioning contractor for the details. It’s essential and inexpensive to change the filter in all your air returns monthly, or whenever the manufacturer suggests. Letting dirt build up in the filter forces the unit to work harder and use more electricity. Call me at 727-535-5817 with questions about whether your air conditioner is as efficient as it can be. It’s always a pleasure to help customers to save energy and remain comfortable, especially in our sweltering Florida summers. |
