Should you have your Air Ducts Cleaned?

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies or asthma, and here in Florida, we have more
than our share of allergens year ‘round. If you or someone in your family is sneezing or coughing, or
if an unreasonable amount of dust seems to be building up in your house, you may want to consider
having your air ducts cleaned.

Ductwork is the round conduit through which air travels after being cooled or heated. If you have not
had air ducts cleaned in five years or more, you probably are thinking about it. Of course, prevention
is always best: change your air filters religiously just as the manufacturer recommends, and use the
right size. Never run your heating or cooling system without filters. They are your first defense
against dust, pet dander and plant allergens.

But filters can only do so much. Almost inevitably, dust will build up in air ducts. You will almost
always see dust around grilles and air returns; this does not mean your ducts need to be cleaned.
Just vacuum the covers. It’s in the duct work you can’t see where problems could be hiding.

Ask your licensed contractor if pests, vermin or substantial mold exists in the interior of your ducts,
or if they are literally clogged. If so, have them cleaned right away. If the situation is not that dire, ask:

  • What other sources of indoor air pollution could exist in my home (second hand smoke, pets
who need to be groomed more often, dust from nearby traffic)?
  • Are my ducts made of sheet metal or flex duct? Will you be using a brush that cannot
damage the interior of my ducts?
  • Are you planning to spray biocide inside my ducts? If so, probably you and your pets should
leave the house while spraying is going on, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • What precautions will you take to avoid spreading dust inside my home during duct cleaning?

After duct cleaning, your cooled or heated air should smell fresh. The dust mite population will
definitely be lowered, although it is almost impossible to stop them forever. (Wash all bedding
including pillows in hot water occasionally to kill dust mites. Direct sunlight also kills dust mites.)
Asthma and allergy sufferers allergic to dust mites and their enzymes will have fewer symptoms.

Call me at 727-535-5817 or 813-925-3000 if I can provide more information or guidance on duct
cleaning, dust mites and indoor air quality.
