In Florida, our pools provide us months of healthy fun every year. It's easy to forget they represent a serious threat to toddlers. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in and around the home for children under age five in Florida.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission offers guidelines for preventing child drownings via installed barriers that keep kids away from the pool. A successful pool barrier prevents a child from getting over, under or through it and shuts the pool access off from the child unless a supervising adult is present. (Of course, you should always supervise children in pools, but most of the victims were being supervised by one or both parents when the swimming pool accidents occurred.)
